Belated holiday celebrations

While I was sick for the month of March, recipes I wanted to cook relative to March holidays piled up. One of them was pie in accordance with Pi Day, which is a cheeky fake holiday occuring on the 14th of March. In a continuing effort to determine how lazy my parents were when they cook dinner for me, I bought some steak tips to attempt one of my dad's specialties. To round out the night, I made rosemary sweet potato fries - one of my favorite orders from Clover food trucks.

The ingredients cost less than $30, despite buying $15 worth of steak tips. The most time consuming part of the night was the chopping, as I peeled and finely chopped two sweet potatoes and about 5 mini apples.

I am getting more comfortable with just "winging it" in the kitchen. with regards to cooking Maybe I'll work recipe-free once I've accomplished all of my foreseeable cooking goals. Anyways, the potato strips took a bath in oil and rosemary, then a sauna break in the oven for about 40 minutes. I burnt the smaller ones, but the majority of the fries were the right amount of crispy-ness. Next time, if I want the fries to taste even crispier, I'm told that they need to be fried twice. I failed to take a picture of the final product, but but believe me when I say that they were more delicious than appetizing.

When it comes to baking, I have not yet read enough literature on the science behind the craft and refuse to deviate from recipes. Thusly, the entirety of the apple pie recipe came from Julia Childs' Joy of Cooking book. I've really got to remember that I own that book, as there are tons of recipes in there that I would love to try.

I made the dough right when I got home, letting it sit and rise for the next hour. Once again I confirmed how much awful ingredients are in a dessert - several cups of flour and too much butter. The lattice was the most difficult part of the pie, mainly because it took me a bit of time to figure out the most optimal way to roll out long skinny pieces of dough. I ended up rolling balls of dough into long snakes, then flattening out the snakes with a rolling pin. I hope Julia Childs would be proud of my final product.

The taste tester

Despite the steak being seasoned a little to harshly, expensive steak tips taste like delicious, sensual expensive steak tips. This was a rare treat, as the ratio of price to leftovers was a little to high for a recent college graduate. But holiday celebrations call for special treats!

'Til next time, little chefs!
